It was 1997. I had just left the retail industry, which I had been in for over a decade. I had made a conscious choice to build a recording studio. It was shortly after that that Glittertown Studios was born. The studio ran out of my Calvary Chapel Huntington Beach office, where I led the music ministry. I also gave vocal lessons to worship team members and aspiring recording artists there. I also produced radio promos for special events at the church.
It was during this time that I reconnected with Dan Hohulin. During my days with the band Fair Exchange, Dan helped out as a stellar producer. He had been introduced to me by Marc Miller and Gary Zdenek of Fair Exchange. While in Fair Exchange, I could experience Dan’s musician, composer, and producer abilities. I was impressed.
Dan approached me seeking help completing an album that had been in production for some time.
“Not Guilty” was a project that St. Andrews Presbyterian Church members in Irvine, California, were producing.
A church member had contributed to the album’s recording costs and production. The band had completed several tracks for the project. During the album’s recording, funds were spent on a high-end studio to record the drums, guitar, grand piano, and bass. Regrettably, the keyboardists hired for the project chose to leave in the middle of it. Dan then brought me on board to finish the keyboard parts after funds ran out.
Dan met me at my studio and brought over his ADAT machine. The idea was to have me track keyboard parts in my studio to complete the album. But the process was moving slower than everyone had hoped. Dan, who had lived in Buena Park, California, had moved to San Diego. Therefore, the time frame we had to work with was limited, and attempting to complete all eleven tracks within this window was unrealistic.
Dan asked if I would come to San Diego for a few days to finish the remaining tracks. I agreed. My only request was for a box of Cap’n Crunch and not to be disturbed until I completed the recording. Dan agreed.
I packed up my gear and headed to San Diego the following day. After a few days of tracking, I completed my parts for the album. It was released independently by Rainbow 4 Production.
The artist, Cheryl, called me back to perform the album live at a concert held for its release at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irvine, California. It was quite an incredible experience, as well as a memorable launch for Glittertown Studios. I have included the finished tracks from the final album.
