Lyrics

When I Met You
I Was Young And Alone
Full Of Excitement
Curiosity Had Grown

Young Willing And Able
My Temperature Arose
One Look In Your Eyes
And You Know How It Goes

Your Love Has Hit Me
It Knocked Meta The Ground
I Still Haven’t Recovered
From The Love I Have Found

I Like The Way You Move
I Like The Way You Talk
And When It Comes To Making Love
There’s No Such Thing As Stop

Just Pumping To The Music
We Were Pumping More And More
Just Pumping To The Music
We Were Pumping More And More

Now I Know That
What You Say Is True
Cause When It Comes To Making Love
There Ain’t Nothing We Can’t Do

I Love Being Near You
And I Love Being Close
Knowing That You Want Me
Is What I Like The Most

Your Love Has Hit Me
It Knocked Meta The Ground
I Still Haven’t Recovered
From The Love I Have Found

I Like The Way You Move
I Like The Way You Talk
And When It Comes To Making Love
There’s No Such Thing As Stop

Just Pumping To The Music
We Were Pumping More And More
Just Pumping To The Music
We Were Pumping More And More

Solo

Your Love Has Hit Me
It Knocked Meta The Ground
I Still Haven’t Recovered
From The Love I Have Found

I Like The Way You Move
I Like The Way You Talk
And When It Comes To Making Love
There’s No Such Thing As Stop

We Were Pumping More And More

I Hate To Talk About
What Might Have Been
They Say That
All Good Things
Come To An End

I Wish They Could Be
Like They Were Before
But Now I’m Standing
Here Outside Your Door

And I Promised Myself
I Would Never Feel This Way
And I Promised Myself
I Would Never Run Away
And I Promised Myself
These Games I’d Never Play

But I Guess I Lied
To Myself Again
But I Guess I Lied
To Myself Again

Now I’m On The
Outside Looking In
I Can’t Help Wonder
Where The Love Has Been
Was This A Lie
That I Was Blind To See
Or Were You All This Time
Just Fooling Me

And I Promised Myself
I Would Never Feel This Way
And I Promised Myself
I Would Never Run Away
And I Promised Myself
These Games I’d Never Play

But I Guess I Lied
To Myself Again
But I Guess I Lied
To Myself Again

I Hate To Talk About
What Might Have Been
They Say That
All Good Things
Come To An End

I Wish They Could Be
Like They Were Before
But Now I’m Standing
Here Outside Your Door

And I Promised Myself
I Would Never Feel This Way
And I Promised Myself
I Would Never Run Away
And I Promised Myself
These Games I’d Never Play

I Turned To You
You Turned Away
I Asked You Why
You Wouldn’t Say

I Thought The Love
We Had Was Strong
Now I Don’t Know
Where I Went Wrong

But Don’t Walk Away
Don’t Leave This Way
Don’t Walk Away

So Much For Promises
We Had Made
For Your This Love
Has Seemed To Fade

After All That
We’ve Been Though
I Can’t Stop
From Loving You

But Don’t Walk Away
Don’t Leave This Way
Don’t Walk Away

I Know You Feelings
Are Still There
And Deep You
Might Even Care

But If It’s
Over Let Me Know
So That Way
I Can Let You Go

But Don’t Walk Away
Don’t Leave This Way
Don’t Walk Away
Don’t Leave This Way
Don’t Walk Away

Sitting In My Room
Waiting For Your Call
Time Ticking Away
And Still Nothing At All

Felling I Can’t Hide
Because Of All The Pain
Yet I Always Seem To Smile
When I Hear Your Name

I Can’t Understand
Can This All Be Me
You Know That I Love You
Way Can’t You Love Me

People Call Me Crazy
Because Of How I Feel
Yet I Pray It’s Not A Dream
Because It Feels So Real

So I’m Gotta Keep Wishing
I’m Gotta Keep Hoping
I’m Gotta Keep Dreamin’
Of You

Solo

Walking Hand In Hand
Only In A Dream
Yet Deep Down Still Knowing
You Don’t Dream Of Me

Then We Walk Along
Gazing At The Moon
Please Don’t Let
This Dream End
Because It’s Much Too Soon

My Dreams End So Quickly
Must There Be An End
There Seems Never Any Chance
For Them To Begin

So I’m Gotta Keep Wishing
I’m Gotta Keep Hoping
I’m Gotta Keep Dreamin’
Of You

So I’m Gotta Keep Wishing
I’m Gotta Keep Hoping
I’m Gotta Keep Dreamin’
Of You
Of You

Solo Ii

We Talked Again Today
And You Said Goodbye
Now Every Time
I Hear Your Name I Begin To Cry
Hoping You’ll Return
Knowing That You Won’t
But I Know That You’ll Remain Here
Only In My Dreams

Wishing
Hoping
Dreamin’

Wishing
Hoping
Dreamin’

There’s Something I Must Tell You
So Much I Want To Say
So Take The Time To Listen
Cause Baby I Just Can’t Wait

Let Me Hold You Closer
Run My Fingers Through You Hair
Press Your Body Next To Mine
And I’ll Whisper In Your Ear

There Are Times When I’m Alone
And I Can’t See Past Today
The Worlds A Burden I Must Bear
When I Just Can’t Find My Way

Solo

Then I Look Your Eyes
And I Melt Like Ice
In The Summer Sun
My Life Has Just Begun
Suddenly You’re The One

Then I Need You More
Than The Day Before
I Don’t Why You Make Me High
I Feel So Good Inside

Love It Seems Is Found In Dreams
And Dreamers Never Win
I’m Searching A Cold Dark Road
And I Just Can’t See The End

There Are Times When I’m Alone

Woke Up This Morning
Felt The Sunshine On My Face
How Good It Feels To Be Alive

See The Clouds Smile
In Their Old Failure Place
Today They Didn’t Try To Hide

Watch A Rainbow Touch The Sky
See The Children Start To Play
See The Birds Fly On By
It’s Just Another New Day

It’s Just Another New Day
Just Another New Day
It’s Just Another New Day
It’s Just Another New Day

Feel The Magic
Feel It Floating
Though Your Soul
Let It Take You For A Ride
New Creation As You
See The Beauty Grow
And You Couldn’t
Stop It If You Tried

Feel The Sunlight In The Sky
Watch The Morning Melt Away
See The Beauty With You Eyes
It’s Just Another New Day

Solo

Ooh Ooh Ooo Awe Yeah

Solo

It’s Just Another New Day
Just Another New Day
It’s Just Another New Day
It’s Just Another New Day

It’s Just Another New Day
It’s Another New Day
Another New Day
You Got That Right

Ooh Ooo Ooo Ooo
Another New Day

Inside A Crystal Ball
They Future Tells It All
So I Ask You Crystal Ball
Please Tell Me What You See

I’m All Alone Right Now
Crystal Ball Show Me Somehow
Will I Be Here Tomorrow
Must I Face My Life Today

My Heart Is Empty
My Insides Are Growing Cold
Fear Of What The Future
Might Bring Me
And The Secrets That You Hold

Now It’s Time I Face The Truth
Of What The Future Has To Say
I Must Live Through Tomorrow Hey
So I Will Face My Life Today

Jumping Off The Deep End
I Think I’m Gonna Drown
Cause When This World Starts
Spinning Too Fast
I’m Gonna Feel The Pain

One Thing I Know For Sure
Life Around Me Still Goes On
With Love Or Without Love
It Doesn’t Change A Thing

(Crystal Ball)
Oh Crystal Ball
Showing Me The Secrets You Hide
As I Look In Side
Inside A Crystal

(Crystal Ball)
Oh Crystal Ball
Showing Me The Secrets You Hide
As I Look In Side
Inside A Crystal Ball

As I Gaze Upon You
(Crystal)
I Can See An Image
(Crystal)
Where I Am Within You
(Crystal)
I Wanna See What You See

Now I Can See
That Fact That I’m Alive
But The Image
Isn’t Coming In Clear
Are We Alive In Spirits
When We Live Our Lives In Fear

Jumping Off The Deep End
Do You Think
You’re Gonna Drown
Cause When This World Starts
Spinning Too Fast
You’re Gonna Feel The Pain

One Thing I Know For Sure
Life Around Me Still Goes On
With Love Or Without Love
It Doesn’t Change A Thing
No No No

(Crystal Ball)
Hey Crystal Ball
Showing The Secrets You Hide
As I Look In Side

Oh Crystal Ball
Showing The Secrets You Hide
As I Look In Side
Inside A Crystal Ball

The Album

It was 1988 when I was in my first garage band at 19. I was very young and found myself in a group of other young guys, all wanting to do something great, something no one had ever done. I was determined to create something that would change the world. New Day began in the bedroom of bass player Rob Trujillo. This young band’s mission was to write, record, and produce original music—no cover songs. We would have to rely solely on the music we created as a group.

New Day, whose original name was Quest, came together at the tale end of the ’80s. We were four very ambitious musicians led by Rob Trujillo (bass), Bill Scherer (lead/rhythm guitar), Xavier Bejinez (drums), and me (keyboards). We made our way from Rob’s tiny bedroom in Buena Park, California, to showcase our songs and talents in front of television cameras and a large audience as we took the stage of The Green Door for the cable access show “Hollywood Showcase for Bands,” hosted by Pop Rock.

Other band members who came and went during the group’s run included Michelle Hughes (original lead vocalist) and David Perrigan (guitarist). Each left New Day just before our performance on “Hollywood Showcase for Bands.” You can still hear contributions from guitarist Dave Perrigan in our initial five-song demo. For the four remaining members, this experience, being our first actual musical project, would be an exercise in learning our craft through much trial and error.

Crafting the band’s early songs, such as the song “Pumpin” (written by Rob Trujillo and Bill Scherer) and the song “I Don’t Know What You’ve Been Thinking Of” (written by Rob Trujillo), came easy to Rob, Bill, and Xavier and helped chart the band’s early musical direction. However, once I became a band member, my prolific songwriting additions quickly made my contributions a more significant part of what New Day’s sound became. We cultivate a unique style and sound with each new level of creativity. The four of us as a band would collectively work together like a well-oiled machine as we broadened our skills as performers, instrumentalists, and songwriters.

New Day would begin to categorize its different levels of musical achievement. Our first level consisted of three-chord rock tunes and our first songwriting stage. An example would include the song “Don’t Walk Away.” These songs generally had a basic straightforward, rock feel and usually consisted of a three-chord rock progression. Level two would introduce broader themes and add more intricacies to the mix and a more commercial sound. You can hear this in songs like “Dreamin'” and “Crystal Ball.” Level three was considered advanced and would include adding more elaborate structural changes to the music and reflecting a more progressive slant in songs such as “Pink Horizons, Purple Skies” and the instrumental piece “S.O.S. (Symphony of Sound).” Choruses and bridges were no longer essential for a song to be a completed work. At the time, my exposure to the British prog-rock group Marillion by guitarist Dave Perrigan may explain some of the more progressive tendencies I began to pursue. Included in this newly crafted direction was an instrumental intro I had penned for the closing of the Green Door show, which was without a title at the time. But it would later become known as “World-Go-Round.”

With all of the instrumentation for our first demo completed (which included guitar parts by Dave Perrigan), there was still one huge problem. The band needed a lead vocalist, and finding one would be daunting. At the time, no one in the band could take on the role of a lead singer.

Michelle Hughes, our original lead vocalist was to record lead vocal parts for the demo; however, this never happened due to a falling out with the band. The lead vocals still need to be completed for the demo. With no other options, I recorded the lead vocals for the songs at the last minute. Fortunately, despite my last-minute recording, the demo garnered us a slot on “Hollywood Showcase for Bands” However, my lead vocals were only temporary and far from what we had envisioned for New Day’s debut, especially if we were going to perform in such a large venue. With little luck, we continued to audition what felt like every singer in Orange County.

Eventually, after months of auditioning vocalists, the band offered the position to Shannon Mcleary. Rob met Shannon at his place of work, which, at the time, was at Knott’s Berry Farm, as Rob did a lot of audio work for the amusement park. Shannon’s demo included a cover of the song “These Dreams” by the band Heart. It was a reasonably good cover for such an ambitious song.

So with our submission deadline fast approaching, the band ultimately decided to work with Shannon, despite my concerns regarding how well-suited she was for the band. Whether intentional or not, the decision to add Shannon would subsequently lead to the band’s most significant strife.

New Day would eventually make its way to the stage of The Green Door for “Hollywood Showcase for Bands .”And truth be told, we had a stellar time and performance. Instrumentally, we were as good as a group of guys who had only met nine months earlier could sound that night. After the show, the band Entity (who also performed that night) asked to open for them. As good as our musical performance was, I still struggled with whether to remain in the band after Shannon’s performance during that show, more specifically, after watching the video of her performance that night. Vocally she performed satisfactorily for what the band required for the showcase. However, I found it difficult to see much in the way of her stage presence moving forward with the band. I believed wholeheartedly that musically and instrumentally, the four of us had much more potential to unlock. We were a talented group of guys with a great deal of chemistry on and off stage. I did not feel Shannon brought anything more to the table. The rest of the band fervently disagreed with me.

It would ultimately come down to either she goes, or I go. Having also felt that I had grown as much as I could in the band, I decided I would be the one to go.

I shared my decision to leave the band with Rob. After a New Day recording session, the conversation happened on the drive back from California State University Dominguez Hills. It became clear that Rob was not surprised by my decision. Rob had already written out several songs he intended to keep for New Day in the event of my departure. By this point, I felt I had already relinquished my standing in the band, so I chose not to argue. Truth be told. I also knew I would likely be writing quite a few more songs.

After I left New Day, I would move on to find a whole host of new opportunities in music. The first would be an original song, “So Far Away .” My friend, Kelly Buckner, would perform the song on stage. Her performance of the song received a first-place award at a Bellflower All-City Talent Competition. Her performance even made it into the local newspaper. But there was also another project that I had long wanted to explore. That project would be the art-rock band, Fable.

Sadly, following my departure, New Day never performed again. Finding another keyboardist became quite an arduous undertaking. Shannon took up singing with a cover band, so schedules and practices became rare. However, New Day’s performance would ultimately appear on the cable access show “Hollywood Showcase For Bands.” The promise of all that potential New Day had to offer after our performance at The Green Door was sadly never fully realized.

This page includes New Day’s original five-song demo, recorded in Rob’s bedroom on his Tascam 4-track. Also included are five additional live tracks from our 1989 concert at The Green Door in Montclair, California. You can also hear the voice of Ron Brady, host of the cable access show “Hollywood Showcase for Bands.”
