In early 1991, the band New Day reunited for a short stint to compete on the “Hollywood Showcase for Bands” television show. Even though New Day had broken up a year earlier, the band reached the top ten, which helped it win a slot to compete in the show’s grand finale.
The lineup this time would see the return of guitarist Dave Perrigan and original New Day members Rob Trujillo (bass/vocals), Xavier Bejinez (drums/percussion), and me (keyboards/lead vocals).
With a revitalized mission, we started by expanding our musical catalog and broadening our creative direction. The group’s revised setlist now features some of my previous band, Fable’s songs, including “Open Invitation,” “Sailing Sam,” “World-Go-Round,” and the epic prog-rock masterpiece “Lavender and Lace.”
Eventually, some of these songs were made available in their studio versions on New Jerusalem’s debut album “Holy Ghost Stories” (©1991) and on my solo album “If You Believe” (©1996). New Day then began adding new originals such as “Winter” and “Midnight Warriors.” We would again showcase our talents on the stage of The Green Door in Montclair, California, and Goodies in Fullerton, California.
Unfortunately, the momentum would only last for a while for New Day. We again found ourselves in the middle of personality and creative conflicts. New Day would part ways for the last time, mere months before we were to compete in the tv show’s finale. So sadly, we will never know what that outcome would have been.
Of course, Dave and I would work together again. The next time we would be on a spiritual journey that would lead us back to the collaboration table to form the band New Jerusalem.
