Recorded in the summer of 1992 on a small Fostex 4-track, this seven-song album was the first official collaboration of David Perrigan on lead/rhythm guitar and me on the keyboard and as lead vocalist since the demise of our previous band, Fable.

It was the tail end of New Day’s second stint when Dave and I got our musical juices flowing again as collaborators. The experience was highly creative and productive. As the New Day chapter closed, Dave revealed he had been experiencing a spiritual awakening. He expressed that it must be a Christian-focused endeavor if he were ever involved in another musical project. Though I was not a Christian, I was open to the idea.

Dave had been sharing his faith with me. I began attending the same church through Dave extended an invitation to me. I would ultimately give my life to Christ and become a Christian myself. These events lay the foundation for the spiritual awakening and the undertones found in the Holy Ghost Stories album.

These events now set the stage—our seasoned songwriting and lyric writing skills, guided by a new spiritual muse, renewed a partnership that would craft a unique alternative, edgy, progressive rock sound heard throughout the album. Another addition to our bag of tricks would be my newly polished vocals, which quickly moved me toward taking on the lead vocalist position this time.

I had taken criticisms about my abilities as a singer and lead vocalist for the band Fable to heart. After the demise of the band Fable, I centered all of my energy on shaping and perfecting my vocal artistry and strengthening my control and range as a vocalist. New Jerusalem’s first album would be the first test of my efforts. I would add multiple harmonies to my lead vocals for the album, often in a single take. The opening song was sure to leave no doubt that my newly garnered abilities, which I hoped would silence any doubters.

Our first collaborative effort would be the album’s opening song, “Video Messiah.” The song’s chorus and concept were Dave’s contributions. I crafted and arranged a chord progression to become the song’s signature sound.
The song’s subject was the exploitation of Christians by unethical TV evangelists looking to make a quick buck. In addition, some come as false prophets proclaiming a false gospel. The song’s strong message, dynamic chorus, and powerful lyrics would be a standard for the rest of the album’s collaborations.

Having sequenced most of the album, we would look to other session players to help complete the recording, which included Bassist Robert Trujillo on the song “Find Your Parade” and Bassist Mike Jones on the song “Lavender and Lace.”

You can also hear many influences from vocalists like Fish and Steve Hogarth of the progressive rock band Marillion, as they heavily influenced my performance throughout the album.

After the album’s completion and a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, a chance meeting would move us musically to the next level and bring about the need to change the band’s name from New Jerusalem to Fair Exchange.
